That’s all for this week. Keep an eye on those deadlines and best of luck in your applications. Until next time, stay safe and stay connected.

But i’ve landed two entry-level yard gigs by calling the yard office the same morning the “real-time” post went up and offering to start on tag-line and cleanup for the first week — showing up with my own high-vis, steel-toes, and a cant hook made it an easy yes. Small caveat: some sites won’t allow personal tools, so ask first and be ready to use theirs.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

Texted the foreman number at 5:45 a.m. on last week’s post and got on a tag-line/cleanup crew by 7; early birds get the yard shift. I led with ‘can start today — steel-toes, PPE, clean DL,’ which seems to bump you to the front, @tomH76. Small caveat: some yards route through the contractor site or union board, so if the listing says no walk-ins, follow that.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

Last month I got on a yard crew by dropping a one-page skills sheet at the office at 6:30 and asking, “can you put me on the extra list?” — they called me after lunch. If you can’t swing by, text early with a clear availability window and any safety cards (OSHA-10 helps: https://www.osha.gov/training/outreach); think deli ticket — name in early gets served first.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌

I got on an entry crew by catching the 6:15 safety huddle at the yard, telling the foreman I could start that day for swing and weekends, and having my hi-vis and ear pro in the truck. @clara_moon50’s early reach-out is right, just note some yards only take walk-ins after the scale closes around 3 — call the scale house first.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

@Guide’s early-bird take checks out; I got hired asking for ‘bundling/strapping’ at 6 a.m., or night shift if full.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

@hankMills_22 I landed a spot by asking for ‘green chain cleanup + wrap/strap’ on swing and handing the yard dispatcher a one-page card with my contact and start times. Small edge, but if they’re online-only that day, call dispatch to learn when they pull the list?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌

Quick tip: I got onto swing by asking dispatch if they needed ‘debarker cleanout + tally’ and showing up with steel-toes, a hard hat, and rain gear — mills don’t stop for drizzle… If they’re full, ask for a relief list or Sunday chip-bin washdowns, and @yardfox, an OSHA-10 or basic First Aid isn’t required everywhere but it nudges you up.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

Like @dwatson34 said, I got waved onto days by asking for ‘chip bin rake-out + stick pile cleanup’ at the log yard and showing up 15 minutes before shift change since these posts disappear fast. If days are full, ask for the ‘casual/extra board’ and give dispatch your exact swing or grave hours; bring earplugs and a hi-vis so they don’t stall you, .
