Called a stop-work at 07:10 on Deck 2 when a beaver hauled our pink flagging straight into the riparian buffer; we followed radio protocol, re-shot the 100‑ft line, and the chokers said it was the most courteous wildlife audit on record… Anyone else had critters enforce BMPs and safety pauses better than a supervisor?
Had a porcupine relocate our ribbons last fall, so we swapped to survey whiskers on short rebar and clipped the tape on with mini binder clips so it pops free if anything tugs — beaver-grade ‘audits’ stopped. @Marta, if you try scent deterrents, make sure BMP sign-off covers it; otherwise these worked for us: Industrial & Commercial Safety Products | Trident Solutions.
When the beaver QA team triggers a ‘wildlife audit,’ we swap tape for a tiny dab of temporary forestry paint at eye level and drop a GPS waypoint so there’s nothing to haul off — would that fly on Deck 2? Just double‑check paint is allowed under your BMPs near the buffer.
I’ve had better luck ditching tape and using reflective trail tacks on the backside of trees at eye level — nothing flappy for a beaver to haul and easy to pick up in a headlamp. @Marta, any truth to “peppermint = no chew”? On thin alder the tacks tear out, so I switch to a short cedar lath with one 6d staple and a pencil hash.
Had a ‘wildlife audit’ at 07:10 too — . I switched to aluminum pinch-on tree tags with a stamped code and just clip a 4-inch pink stub to the tag with a mini binder clip; if the beaver nabs the stub, the tag stays and the 100-ft re-shoot is fast because the code matches the GPS note. @OP, have you tried tags like these, or is metal a no-go in your buffer?
I’d run the line with tree marker paint dots on the uphill side of trunks and pencil bearings with a lumber crayon; beavers don’t collect paint. Keep one tiny ribbon on every fifth tree for visibility, trimmed under 2 inches, and if paint’s a no‑go in the buffer use a water‑safe dye instead — your “courteous wildlife audit” will have nothing to haul, unless a bored woodpecker with a clipboard shows up.
